Oral History
The Harriet Tubman House Memory Project includes two oral history collections, created 25 years apart. The “South End Honor Roll” was produced by USES from 1995-1996, and offers a broad history of the neighborhood and the role of settlement houses during the 20th century. These interviews were recorded in VHS format and digitized in 2021 as part of the Harriet Tubman House Memory Project.
The 2020-2022 oral history project centers on the experiences of past and present directors, board members, staff, volunteers and community members who have benefited from, served, and engaged with USES via the Harriet Tubman House. Because these interviews took place at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, they were conducted via Zoom. Read more about the BRC’s oral history practices on the About page.

This oral history was collected and recorded as part of the South End Honor Roll Project-an effort led in 1995 by the United South End Settlements (USES) and funded by the Massachusetts Cultural Council-to collect stories about the South End neighborhood of Boston from individuals with diverse backgrounds. Oral histories include interviewees who identify as Black, Puerto Rican, Dominican-, Irish-, Lebanese-, and Ukrainian-American. Memories and personal anecdotes mostly date from the Great Depression to World War II to post-war times. Largely, topics concern community organization, cultural traditions, social experiences, and changes in the urban fabric of the neighborhood over time. These group interviews were conducted in-person at the homes of some of the interviewees in 1995, and were led by Guadulesa Rivera, then Cultural Coordinator at USES.

An interview with Christopher Hayes (1932-2009), Clare Hayes, and Helen Helman (1912-1997), who discuss their lives in the South End and the history of neighborhood. Clare is the wife of Christopher and daughter of Helen, who reminisces about growing up as Ukrainian-American in Boston in the 1910s and 1920s. Christopher-a milkman and community organizer of Irish-American descent-discusses the South End community and politics in Boston in the subsequent decades. The interviewees collectively recount family life, as well as urban and social changes in the neighborhood, especially around the Bradford Street area, the location of Helman family home.

An interview with Evelyn Abdalah Menconi (1919-2003), Jeannette Hajjar (1928-2004), and Laurie Malooly, who are all of Lebanese descent, discuss growing up as Arab Americans in Boston, in particular in the 1930s and 1940s: Hajjar and Malooly from the South End, and Abdalah Menconi from West Roxbury, but with roots in the South End. They recount the experiences of Lebanese and Syrian immigrants coming to Boston, the struggles that they faced, and the importance of Denison House, a local settlement house, to them. The interviewees talk about keeping their own Lebanese traditions alive, and the impact of their culture, especially through music, literature, and religion.

An interview with Mel King (1928-), Jovita Fontanez (1942-), Carmen Torres, and an unidentified interviewee. King-a lifelong resident of the South End-was a writer, community organizer, and political activist in the neighborhood, beginning in the 1950s. Fontanez, who is of Puerto Rican descent, also had a long career in the South End as a community organizer and neighborhood activist, working particularly in support of the Latino community, beginning in the 1980s. Together, Fontanez and Torres served on the Board of the Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción (IBA) in Boston in the late 1980s and early 1990s. In this roundtable discussion, the interviewees all discuss the positive impact of community organization and the struggle of continuing to live in a gentrified South End. They also speak about the diverse populations that have been present in the South End, with particular focus on the Latino community.

An interview with Teddy McLaren, Alice Sanford (1928-2017), Dorothea Collins, Barbara Williams, and four unidentified interviewees, who reminisce about their early years growing up in the South End as Black women during the 1930s and 1940s. They recount a wide variety of memories of family, neighborhood, and school life in these and subsequent decades. The group also discusses the impact of music on their lives such as taking instrument lessons and attending shows in Boston by notable jazz musicians and entertainers. The changes in demographics and the urban fabric of the South End is also a consistent topic throughout the interview.

An interview with Jared Katsiane, a filmmaker whose work has been shaped through growing up in the South End in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1990, after stints living in Vermont and in and around other parts of Boston, he moved back to the South End, where he has lived since that year. Katsiane recalls early memories of the neighborhood and attending community programs hosted by the United South End Settlements (USES) at the Harriet Tubman House, and later became a volunteer and filmmaker there in the 1990s. He also discusses his active involvement in neighborhood as an adult at the Tubman House, community events there, and the changing landscape over time.

This item was collected and digitized as part of the Harriet Tubman House Memory Project, a Boston Research Center effort from 2020 to 2022 to preserve the history of the Harriet Tubman House, which stood at 566 Columbus Avenue in Boston's South End neighborhood from 1975 to 2020. The building was the base of operations for United South End Settlements (USES), as well as a community center, gathering space, art gallery, and main office for several nonprofit organizations. Harriet Tubman House services continue at USES' historic Rutland Street campus. The Harriet Tubman House Memory Project was designed with current staff of the USES and community members affiliated with the activist group I Am Harriet (IAH). These interviews largely took place via remote recording technology during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, and were conducted by staff and volunteers at the Northeastern University Library and the Boston Public Library. These interviews represent the stories of past and present staff, artists, and community members involved with the Harriet Tubman House since the building's development in the 1970s.

An interview with Marisa Luse, who is the Campus Engagement and Collaborations Manager at Northeastern University. She grew up in Roxbury-close to the South End-in the 1980s, and she recounts how the Harriet Tubman House of the United South End Settlements (USES) was an anchor and center of community life. Luse also discusses busing and racial tensions during those years, her family dynamics, and the inspirations to pursue community work in her own career.
